Dr. Mark A. Jabor is board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology. He is a native El Pasoan and attended medical school at Texas-Tech School of Medicine. There he was inducted into the prestigious honor society Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA). He completed an internship in General Surgery and went on to complete a residency in Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at Tulane University School of Medicine. After this, Dr. Jabor completed a Plastic Surgery residency at St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas. He has authored several book chapters, presented papers at national and state meetings as well as publishing numerous articles in peer reviewed journals.

The facial muscles that control facial expression are subcutaneous, or just under the skin. These facial muscles (also called mimetic muscles) are innervated or ’supplied’ by the facial nerve. The loss of facial innervation often results in a partial loss of facial control, or facial paralysis (the inability to smile or move the face). This condition can be congenital, as some are born with this problem) or the result of a surgical procedure such as tumor removal, loss of innervation due to facial trauma, or as a result of a viral infections, such as Bells Palsy.
There are plastic surgeons that have a special interest in treating patients with this condition. Several possible treatment options exist. These options include nerve grafting techniques and micro-vascular muscle transfer procedures.

Prior to your liposuction procedure, your cosmetic surgeon will carefully outline the areas of bulging fat that are to be suctioned. He or she will then draw detailed contour lines in order to further define the contour and shape characteristics of the deposits of fat. Plastic surgeons will use the “tumescent technique” in which a large amount of fluid will be initially placed to swell the area. This technique allows for fat to be removed in a very safe, smooth, and symmetrical manner. The fluid is capable of helping to loosen the fat while it also provides a local anesthesia for operative and immediate post-operative discomfort. The fluid will also be able to provide epinephrine which is able to decrease bleeding.

Burn Reconstruction surgery following a severe burn is a delicate procedure in which a surgeon must decide how to treat a wound, carefully assess its size, severity, and features. A split-thickness skin graft, which is most commonly used to treat burn wounds, uses only the layers of skin that re closest to the surface of the skin. in some cases, it is possible for a plastic surgeon to choose a donor site that is in a less conspicuous place.
A full-thickness skin graft is normally used to treat large, deep burn wounds or to cover lost areas of skin over joints where maximum skin elasticity and movement are necessary.

A rhytidectomy is very individualized. In your initial consultation with your plastic surgeon he or she will evaluate your face. He or she will follow that with a review of your medical history and will check you for any conditions that would cause a problem during or after the surgery. These conditions include uncontrolled high blood pressure, the tendency to form excessive scars, and blood clotting problems. If you are a smoker, your cosmetic surgeon will counsel you on the increased risks associated with healing and he or she will wait for you to have stopped smoking for at least two months before performing a procedure.
