Weight loss surgery is major surgery. Its growing use to treat obesity and morbid obesity is the result of three factors: our current knowledge of the significant health risks of morbid obesity, the relatively low risk and complications of the procedures versus not having surgery, and the ineffectiveness of current non-surgical approaches to produce sustained weight loss. The materials found here will provide valuable information on the benefits and risks of weight loss surgery. However, the best way to get a full assessment of your condition is to schedule a consultation to determine if weight loss surgery may be an option for you. Breast surgery in Michigan

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Also known as augmentation mammaplasty, breast augmentation involves using implants to fulfill your desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Breast augmentation does not correct severely drooping breasts. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted due to sagging, a breast lift may be required in conjunction with breast augmentation. Breast lifting can often be done at the same time as your augmentation or may require a separate operation. Your plastic surgeon will assist you in making this decision.
The success and safety of your breast augmentation procedure depends very much on your complete candidness during your consultation. You’ll be asked a number of questions about your health, desires and lifestyle. Your plastic surgeon will also discuss where your procedure will be performed. Breast augmentation surgery may be performed in an accredited office-based surgical center, outpatient ambulatory surgical center or a hospital.
If your breast augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.
The decision to have breast augmentation surgery is extremely personal and you’ll have to decide if the benefits will achieve your goals and if the risks and potential complications are acceptable.

Breast Augmentation with a Breast Lift

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

The breast augmentation breast lift combination procedure has become more commonly requested in recent years. The trick in the decision for the breast augmentation breast lift combination procedure is based on the anatomy of the breasts. Many women have the desire to increase breast size, but may not consider that adding weight to the breasts will produce a greater amount of sagging. For this reason, some breast augmentation candidates require a breast lift. Breast lift procedures address many types of changes that women may desire. The breast lift may be required to lift the breasts, create upper pole fullness in the top portion of the breasts and/or improve the appearance of asymmetrical breasts.

The breast lift is a procedure that may also be performed without a breast augmentation should breast size increase not be a factor in breast augmentation. Plastic surgeons may reposition existing breast tissue to enhance the appearance of breasts in a breast lift procedure. Repositioning of the breast tissue can create more upper pole fullness in the breasts, improve asymmetry and present an enhanced appearance in clothes.

Nose Surgery by Dr. Piro

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Rhinoplasty, or surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. It may also correct a birth defect or injury, or help relieve some breathing problems.

When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. Nevertheless, there is always a possibility of complications, including infection, nosebleed, or a reaction to the anesthesia. You can reduce your risks by closely following your surgeon’s instructions both before and after surgery.

In the days following surgery, when your face is bruised and swollen, it’s easy to forget that you will be looking better. In fact, many patients feel depressed for a while after plastic surgery-it’s quite normal and understandable.

Still, healing is a slow and gradual process. Some subtle swelling may be present for months, especially in the tip. The final results of rhinoplasty may not be apparent for a year or more.

Dr. Piro’s Liposuction techniques

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Fluid Injection, a technique in which a medicated solution is injected into fatty areas before the fat is removed, is commonly used by plastic surgeons today. The fluid — a mixture of intravenous salt solution, lidocaine (a local anesthetic) and epinephrine (a drug that contracts blood vessels) — helps the fat be removed more easily, reduces blood loss and provides anesthesia during and after surgery. Fluid injection also helps to reduce the amount of bruising after surgery.

Large volumes of fluid — sometimes as much as three times the amount of fat to be removed — are injected in the tumescent technique. Tumescent liposuction, typically performed on patients who need only a local anesthetic, usually takes significantly longer than traditional liposuction (sometimes as long as 4 to 5 hours). However, because the injected fluid contains an adequate amount of anesthetic, additional anesthesia may not be necessary.

The super-wet technique is similar to the tumescent technique, except that lesser amounts of fluid are used. Usually the amount of fluid injected is equal to the amount of fat to be removed. This technique often requires IV sedation or general anesthesia and typically takes one to two hours of surgery time.

Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL). This technique requires the use of a special cannula that produces ultrasonic energy. As it passes through the areas of fat, the energy explodes the walls of the fat cells, liquefying the fat. The fat is then removed with the traditional liposuction technique.

Liposuction in California by Dr. Frank Piro

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Liposuction is recommended for patients who have excess subcutaneous fat, which is resistant to diet and exercise. If you wish to change the contours of your body. Commonly involved areas are the anterior part of the neck (under the chin), upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts, trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Most patients are near normal weight and desire permanent contour changes.
Liposuction provides a permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated areas. Creating a more flattering figure or physique, in or out of clothing. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis. General anesthesia is usually used for safety and comfort.

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. You should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in your expectations. Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.

If your expectations are realistic, you will probably be very pleased with the results of your surgery. You may find that you are more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with your body. And, by eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, you can help to maintain your new shape.
