This is capable of allowing for the scar to become minimized and camouflaged in a much more functional and aesthetic way.

The natural result of the body’s attempt to heal an open wound or tear in the surface of the skin or body tissues is a scar. Every person forms scars, and scars are always resulting from surgical incisions or trauma which goes all the way to the deeper layers of skin and sometimes the structures. A scar will in fact result from any type of cosmetic surgery procedure. There is no such thing as a cosmetic surgery procedure that does not leave a scar, regardless of what is advertised or hyped.

San Diego Plastic Surgery – Surf the web looking for pretty much anything, and you’re bound to find a wealth of information ranging from unbiased to unabashed, acclaim to accusation. Look up plastic surgery and the opinions will take you to every possible point of a compass. Is it right or wrong to undergo a cosmetic procedure? Perhaps a better question would be, is it right or wrong for you? For example, missing a tooth hardly threatens anyone’s survival, but replacing it can sure make things easier. Jamie Farr did fine with a prominent nose, but not everyone is so successful at “owning” their unusual look. It is also sometimes possible to improve one’s ability to breathe through rhinoplasty (which is valuable to survival).

The best choices are informed choices. All of the data must be weighed, for and against, before you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit. You can’t consider information you don’t have, and the most critical details aren’t on the internet. Instead they are about how the science and techniques apply to your unique body. A consultation with a properly qualified, board certified plastic surgeon combines professional expertise with a doctor’s examination to give you what you need. Board certified San Diego plastic surgeon, Dr. Amir Karam, specializes in nose surgery and in surgical and non-surgical rejuvenation of the eyes, neck, and face.

Currently, there are many lasers used for facial and skin rejuvenation and to treat sun damage and photo-aging of the skin. One older laser system, the carbon dioxide laser, has been very effective for treating sun damaged skin but has fallen out of favor. This is because it routinely caused extensive rawness of the skin that typically required over 2 weeks of “hiding out” or “downtime” to recover. In addition to the time it took to heal, it frequently caused skin discoloration and occasionally scarring. Many lasers available today require very little downtime and yield some improvement of the skin but are not nearly as effective as the carbon dioxide laser. As with any procedure, anyone considering laser skin treatments should first consult with a plastic surgeon prior to under going their chosen procedure.

The technique commonly known as MOHS Surgery or MOHS Excision is a method designed by a general surgeon Dr. Frederick Mohs. It is now commonly performed by dermatologists and specialists in MOHS Surgery who have completed additional training in the MOHS technique.

The technique involves a unique form of handling, processing and reading the tissue under the microscope to make sure that the margins of the excision are clear of any cancer cells. It is very reliable and uses very thin, small excisions in a step-wise fashion in order to spare the tissue surrounding the lesion. Normally the technique is used for squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma of the face, and is best used in areas near important structures such as the eyelids, nose, and ears. The MOHS specialist can remove a layer of tissue, and then examine the layer under the microscope while the patient waits, and then remove more tissue as needed.

The MOHS reconstruction can then be performed by a plastic and reconstructive surgeon or by the MOHS surgeon, depending on how complex the defect is. If you have further questions or would like to schedule a consultation, contact Seattle plastic surgeon, Dr. Jeff Scott today.
