Skin Rejuvenation San Diego – BOTOX® Collagen Fine Line Treatments Southern California

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

One of the most popular forms of treatment for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and create smoother, younger skin is injections. In an office-based procedure, the physician uses fine needles to insert a filler into the skin to add volume, replace collagen and/or stimulate natural collagen and new skin cell growth. A host of different types of fillers are available. You will need to talk to your doctor about the advantages and disadvantages of each for your desired results, the area being treated and how deeply the problem occurs in the layers of the skin.

BOTOX Injections (Botulinum Toxin)

Botulinum toxin injections (BTX), often referred to by the product names BOTOX® Cosmetic or Myobloc®, are biological toxins (botulinum toxin) transformed into a therapeutic agent. Work with BOTOX began in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Today, BOTOX is used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead furrows, “crow’s feet,” lines and wrinkles of the lower face, and even nasal muscles (to decrease nostril flaring). BOTOX injections have proven to be a very popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure; see current American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics. Aesthetic plastic surgeons have found that the type of lines and wrinkles that respond to BOTOX injections are those caused by the muscles-specifically those muscles that contract during facial expressions such as frowning or squinting.

Technique
The patient is asked to contract the muscles in the area being treated so the surgeon can determine the proper location for injection. In most cases, BOTOX is injected directly into the muscle with a tiny needle. It takes a few days to realize the effect of BOTOX injections.

Benefits

  • No downtime. Patients can immediately resume normal activities.
  • Long experience has proven BOTOX to be safe. To date, no systemic complications associated with BOTOX injections have been documented.
  • Treatment is reversible within several months.
  • May be beneficial for treatment of migraine headaches.

Other Considerations

  • BOTOX injections are a temporary solution for the treatment of wrinkles. The effects last from 3-4 months and require repeat treatments.
  • Possible side effects include local numbness, swelling, bruising, or a burning sensation during injection. Some patients have reported temporary headache and nausea. Most complications are of short duration and can be avoided with proper injection techniques.
  • A small percentage of patients are reported to experience no improvement at all.

ASAPS Position:
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) maintains that BOTOX injections for aesthetic purposes appear to be safe and effective. Patients who show early signs of aging, as well as those who may not be suitable candidates for more extensive aesthetic facial surgery, may be good candidates for this procedure. Certain medications (some antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, or aspirin) and even some vitamins and herbs may increase the potency of BOTOX and may increase bleeding and bruising at the time of injection. Therefore, patients should be candid with their surgeon about all medications and supplements. Pregnant or nursing women should postpone undergoing this procedure. It is not known whether injection of BOTOX has any effect on a fetus or whether it is found in breast milk.

Eyelid Surgery Information provided by La Jolla Plastic Surgeon Dr. Kincaid M.D.

Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery:

  • excess skin obscuring the natural fold of the upper eyelids
  • loose skin hanging down from the upper eyelids, perhaps impairing vision
  • a puffy appearance to the upper eyelids, making the eyes look tired
  • excess skin and fine, creepy wrinkles of the lower eyelids
  • bags and dark circles under the eyes, often with a depression along the bony border of the lower eyelids
  • droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (colored portion of the eye)

Aesthetic eyelid surgery can usually correct these problems, though other treatments may also need to be considered. For example, if the upper eyelid condition is accompanied by sagging of the eyebrows, then a forehead lift may be recommended. Smoothing of crow’s feet may require chemical peeling or laser resurfacing procedures. Circles beneath the eyes caused by dark pigmentation may be treated with a bleaching solution or chemical peel. Your plastic surgeon can provide further information if you have an interest in any of these additional procedures.

Results of Your Eyelid Surgery

Aesthetic eyelid surgery has the effect of making you look more rested, refreshed and alert. Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait at least several weeks to get an accurate picture of the results of your eyelid surgery. Incisions will fade over a number of months until they become barely visible.

Forehead Lift San Diego – Brow Lift Skin Tightening Southern California

Forehead/Brow Lift Information provided by La Jolla Plastic Surgeon Dr. Kincaid M.D.

Years of gravity and use can cause the eyebrows to droop or sag and frown lines to form on the forehead. These problems can be treated using forehead/brow lift surgery. This procedure is often coupled with a face lift and/or eyelid surgery to achieve a more youthful appearance.

Procedure
Forehead/brow lift surgery is conducted on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia with sedation. An endoscopic technique has gained popularity for forehead/brow lifts because it is less invasive than traditional surgery and causes less scarring. Small incisions are made behind the hairline and a small instrument with a camera is inserted. Using this device, the surgeon removes any excess skin and tightens and lift the muscle and tissue. Small sutures are used to close the incision. The surgery generally takes 1 to 2 hours.

Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for a forehead lift:

  • sagging or low position of the eyebrows, creating a tired or sad appearance
  • deep horizontal creases across the forehead
  • frown lines, or furrows, between the eyebrows and sometimes across the top of the nose

A forehead lift can improve all of these problems. It may often be performed at the same time as a facelift which removes excess skin and tightens muscles in the mid and lower face. If there is significant skin overhang in the upper eyelids, or puffy bags beneath your eyes, eyelid surgery may be recommended in addition to a forehead lift. Your plastic surgeon will provide further information if you have an interest in these procedures.

Facelift Surgery San Diego – Face Lift Surgeon Temecula Inland Empire

Face Lift Information provided by La Jolla Plastic Surgeon Dr. Kincaid M.D.

A facelift (technically known as rhytidectomy) can’t stop the aging process. What it can do is improve the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of your face and neck. Over time, during normal aging or even with weight loss, the face will change resulting in excess skin laxity, joweling, wrinkling and even elongation of the facial skeleton itself compelling patients to seek correction. A face lift helps to restore the more youthful look to your face and neck – smoothing the contours and wrinkles that aging causes. A facelift can be done alone, or in conjunction with other procedures such as a forehead lift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping. A facelift usually takes several hours-or somewhat longer if you’re having more than one procedure done. Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, extend in a natural line in front of the ear (or just inside the cartilage at the front of the ear), and continue behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. In general, the surgeon separates the skin from the fat and muscle below. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour. The surgeon then tightens the underlying muscle and membrane, pulls the skin back, and removes the excess. Stitches secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions.

How long does a facelift last?
The traditional answer is about 10 years, however, this depends upon various factors such as technique, facial type, quality of skin, sun exposure and, yes, smoking. Despite the fact that the process of aging cannot be stopped, one can expect that they will tend to always look better after a face lift – at any age – than if they never had the procedure at all.

Rhinoplasty Surgery in San Diego – Nose Surgery Temecula Inland Empire

Rhinoplasty Information provided by San Diego Plastic Surgeon Dr. Kincaid M.D.

Some of us are unhappy with our nose, either because of its size or shape or because of breathing problems. Rhinoplasty reshapes the skin as well as the bone and cartilage inside to alter the size and shape of the nose. Work on the cartilage that separates the two nasal air passages can help with breathing problems. This so-called “septoplasty” is often done as part of rhinoplasty or as the sole procedure. Sometimes this same cartilage is also used as a graft to help in the nose reshaping. Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. Rhinoplasty can reduce or increase the size of your nose, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and your upper lip. Rhinoplasty usually takes an hour or two, though complicated procedures may take longer. During surgery the skin of the nose is separated from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape. Finally, the skin is redraped over the new framework. Many plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty from within the nose, making their incision inside the nostrils. Others prefer an “open” procedure, especially in more complicated cases; they make a small incision across the columella, the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils. When the surgery is complete, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints also may be placed in your nostrils to stabilize the septum, the dividing wall between the air passages
